Details
Each basket is unique and hand woven by women in the Basket Weaver Group located in Kasigau, South East Kenya. These fair trade baskets are made from locally grown sisal fibres, featuring natural dies and leather trims at the top. Basket weaving is a long time tradition of the Taita culture in South East Kenya.
The Basket Weaver Group's aim is to become less dependent on subsistence agriculture by earning an income from weaving sisal baskets. Agriculture is unreliable in this semi-arid area, where the absence of rain regularly destroys complete harvests.
The sisal baskets come in a range of unique colours and sizes. The approximate sizes are (W x H)
- X-Small - 13 x 13 cms
- Small - 18 x 18 cms
- Medium - 23 x 23 cms
- Large - 28 x 28 cms
- X-Large - 33 x 33 cms
All baskets are unique in size, shape and colour given they are all hand-made.
The image showing three baskets contains a Large, Medium & Small.
