Laura Oczos is a contemporary artist based in Wollongong, NSW. After initially completing a Fine Arts degree and participating in several small group shows, she began to focus on her work in special education, teaching students with internalising and externalising mental health disorders. In 2019 after a 14-year hiatus, she returned to painting. Oczos paints imagined landscapes that are autobiographical in nature. She is interested in the dynamic nature of memory and draws on past and present experiences to create work that often combines multiple points of view and captures the spirit of the moment rather than exact places. Her work explores how memory and meaning can change through retelling and remembering. Utilising various painterly and mark making techniques, these memories become preserved and emerge as maps; visual timestamps that provide proof of her existence.
