New Artist | Helen Otway

New Artist | Helen Otway
Helen Otway is a visual artist based in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, originally from Melbourne. Her work explores the quiet spaces between place, memory, and identity, often drawing from natural surroundings, domestic life, and personal history. Using soft washes, muted tones, and layered compositions, Helen creates paintings that evoke stillness, connection, and emotional resonance. Whether depicting solitary trees, interiors, or symbolic objects, her works invite quiet reflection and a sense of belonging.

Helen’s background in education and ongoing studies at the Byron School of Art inform her thoughtful, evolving practice. Her perspective is shaped by a life lived between places - coastal and inland, past and present - which brings a gentle depth to her imagery. Helen has exhibited in both regional and metropolitan galleries and is proud to be part of the Greenhouse Interiors collection of Australian artists. Her work sits comfortably in both contemporary interiors and contemplative exhibition spaces.

FAVE SONG?'
Recently I can’t seem to get the song Changes by Black Sabbath out of my head. It’s a reminder that things don’t last forever and that change is inevitable, making way for new directions.

FAVE MOVIE?
Road to Patagonia - recently saw this in Byron Bay, and was mesmerised by the cinematography and raw energy of the film.

FAVE RECIPE?
Currently love making falafels from scratch with a fresh zingy salad with herbs from my garden and tahini sauce.

FAVE MOMENT?
Being together with my two daughters and new grandson for the first time in Melbourne. Living interstate has made these moments even more special.

FAVE HOBBY?
Visiting galleries, going to the beach, soaking up the country air and being amongst wildlife at my Nimbin property. I love feeling in awe of my surroundings.

FAVE PIECES?
I love each of the Silva Luna pieces and how they remind me that we are just a small part of this universe.
