I celebrate what others try and hide… what I call the ‘underside’. In life, as in my practice as a Psychologist, I’m interested in the coexistence and interdependence of dark and light, good and bad, fear and joy, and the beauty that can be found in it all. The existence of these primitive feelings sit side by side in a tussle to reach a harmonious balance. My approach to making art is intuitive and instinctive. I channel my feelings into my art and express them directly into the work. My practice hums when I remove thinking and planning from the process and focus on being wholly in the moment and in touch with myself.
I express these feelings as directly as I can with passion and immediacy. Acrylics are my medium of choice, with the use of gouache, oil sticks and metal foils to enhance and elevate the works. My creations tend to be large scale to support my application style which typically involves bold, imprecise brush strokes and the use of textured paint. I draw on my Dutch heritage to instill quaintness and quirkiness into my creations, leaning into the influence of strong Dutch women in my life, represented often by Nehalennia, the Celtic Goddess of the North Sea and protector of seafarers. I’ve been a collector and maker of art for many years, however, have recently dedicated myself to the practice of art making. Developing a body of work that reflects my authentic self has been my priority, whilst also entering group shows such as Red Gallery 2025 and the Paddington Prize (2025). Greenhouse Interiors stock a small selection of works.
